Whilst the Jews were incensed that Jesus had called God his Father, they had intended to kill him because he had apparently broken the sabbath. Jesus answering them asserts the same as elsewhere he spoke "I and the Father are one", by describing how the works He does are the works of His Father. That Jesus heals and grants life as the Father does, and that these works since they are of God, and that Jesus said definitively He Himself is God; that He continues to perform these miracles by His Father is proof outright He is no blasphemer. The Father therefore shows all that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and is God, by His continued works and has all judgement rest with Him to give life or condemn. This should guide you quite happily through to Jesus' reference to John the Baptist in v33. (KJV) Before v33, Jesus proves that by the Witness of God he is the Christ. after v33 he reproves the jews for their unbelief. That many of them received John and many others received John because John was preparing them for Christ. Its a pity they seemed not to like what they received. Sure of themselves in each other's acceptance, and of those their like accept; they rejected Jesus. By what standard did they measure God? It is hard to say that they measured Jesus by the law, but The covenant of God with Israel is in its simplest form, "If they walk in my commandments and do that which is written for them to do in the law then I will be their God and they will be my people." - It doesn't say that God has to keep the commandments or more importantly the traditions of the jews. When the law is broken and an offender is forgiven does the forgiver break the law because the man is unpunished? Nonsense in itself. That the jews would convict God for healing a man on the sabbath; when they expect much needed rain, or calm seas on the sabbath- is that not nonsense also? Because Jesus was God Himself, and angered them so much, they rejected Christ because they would not accept the Father. By the law they made their own stumbling block because they did not know Jesus as the Father, let alone the witness of God the Father to Christ as from God the Father. There is some much needed corroboration to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity in this passage. If you have read the metamath section and understood the model of the trinity as extended from Anselm's argument, then this passage is gold. Verses 19, 21 & 26 are repeated here. (KJV) Joh 5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; (KJV) Verse 19 echoes that the Father and Jesus do their work in (or through the containing property of) the Holy Spirit, - And in the Holy Spirit they are in agreement. - Likewise the Father and Holy Spirit are interchangeable here. Verse 21 shows that Jesus may act independently of God the Father and Holy Spirit, most likely because they find agreement in the Son, (The resurrection and the life) Verse 26 proves that Jesus is God. That Jesus has the power to give up his life and take it up again, that Jesus as God is necessary in Anselm's sense and was with God in the beginning. In the sense of the metamath model, the notes here on verses 21 and 26 should be compared with the knowledge that one of the elements of K4 is K4 itself within the ultrafilter.
